Artaxa montiphaula sp. n


Artaxa montiphaula (holotype)


11-13mm. This is a species slightly larger than phaula, with greyer, less yellow forewings. The genitalia are also very similar, but with: the processes either side of the uncus less tapering, more blunt apically; the plate on the valve with the three spines less evenly spaced (two close together at the dorsal angle and one more strongly downturned at the ventral angle).

Holotype . SARAWAK: Gunung Mulu Nat. Park, R.G.S. Exped. 1977-8 (J.D. Holloway et al.) Site 13, February, Camp 2, Mulu, 500m, 401464, mixed dipt. forest, BM lymantriid slide 1713.

Paratypes: 1 as holotype but Site 14, February, Camp 2.5, Mulu, 1000m 413461, lower montane forest, BM lymantriid slide 1709; 1 SABAH: Mt Kinabalu, Mesilau, 1500m, vii.-ix.1965, Cambridge Expedition to Mt Kinabalu 1965 (H.J. Banks, H.S. Barlow & J.D. Holloway) BM lymantriid slide 2297.

Geographical range. Borneo.

Habitat preference. The species ranges from 500m to 1500m.
