Problepsis apollinaria

Diagnosis. This and Problepsis borneamagna sp. n. are very similar as noted in the diagnosis of the latter. The forewing ocellus lacks a longitudinal black mark in its posterior part, and the continuation of the medial fascia to the tornus is more strongly delineated with silvery scales.

Taxonomic notes. Most of the names in the synonymy above refer to races in the eastern part of the range, characterised by various degrees of reduction in the wing markings. Nielsen, Edwards & Rangsi (1996) indicated preference for the spelling of apollinaria used here on the basis of the first reviser principle applied to Prout' s treatment (1938, Gross-Schmett. Erde, 12: 187), though it is debatable whether spelling in an index has the nomenclatural weight of that in the main body of text!

Geographical range. Indian Subregion to New Guinea and Queensland.

Habitat preference. All records are from lowland localities, including cultivated areas and, at Telisai in Brunei, dry heath forest.
